Missional Music Monday – Christmas Edition

By Monday, December 20, 2010 0 0

Christmas is pretty much all about missions. When you get right down to it, God sending His Son was the first mission trip!

Ok, I just thought of something: you could argue that John the Baptist was actually the first missionary. Many of the OT prophets were missionaries of sorts too.

But the Good News was born in a manger, and this song tells us to share it.

(Missional) Music Monday

It’s so fun to bring new and old music to mind for folks with Missional Music Monday. I hope you enjoy it! Please feel free to share your favorite missional songs and hymns in the comments.

I am fortunate to attend Bible Study Fellowship at a Lutheran church near my home. BSF sings hymns only, and since we’re in a Lutheran church, many of them are new to me. Sometimes, the tune is familiar but the words are totally different.

Last week we sang, “Savior of the Nations, Come.” I remember feeling that it was perfect for Missional Music Monday, but now that I am reading the lyrics I’m not entirely sure why. I thought I’d post it anyway. It’s missional in the sense that it’s news that must be shared!

I loved this hymn, both for the lyrics and the tune. I love songs with that edgy sound (I always say flat because B flat is my favorite note, but I think it’s actually songs in the minor key that I love). I love songs in minor key so much that I chose a dirge for the hymn we sang in our wedding! (The one I linked to is a great version but my favorite is by Indelible Grace).

“Savior of the Nations, Come”
by Martin Luther, 1483-1546

Savior of the nations, come,
Virgin’s Son, make here Thy home!
Marvel now, O heaven and earth,
That the Lord chose such a birth.

Not by human flesh and blood,
By the Spirit of our God,
Was the Word of God made flesh–
Woman’s Offspring, pure and fresh.

Wondrous birth! O wondrous Child
Of the Virgin undefiled!
Though by all the world disowned,
Still to be in heaven enthroned.

From the Father forth He came
And returneth to the same,
Captive leading death and hell–
High the song of triumph swell!

Thou, the Father’s only Son,
Hast o’er sin the victory won.
Boundless shall Thy kingdom be;
When shall we its glories see?

Brightly doth Thy manger shine,
Glorious is its light divine.
Let not sin o’er cloud this light;
Ever be our faith thus bright.

Praise to God the Father sing,
Praise to God the Son, our King,
Praise to God the Spirit be
Ever and eternally.

Hymn # 95

Missional Music Monday – I Will Follow

By Monday, October 25, 2010 0 0

I Will Follow on YouTube

Where you go, I'll go
Where you stay, I'll stay
When you move, I'll move
I will follow...

All your ways are good
All your ways are sure
I will trust in you alone
Higher than my sight
High above my life
I will trust in you alone

Where you go, I'll go
Where you stay, I'll stay
When you move, I'll move
I will follow you
Who you love, I'll love
How you serve I'll serve
If this life I lose, I will follow you
I will follow you

Light unto the world
Light unto my life
I will live for you alone
You're the one I seek
Knowing I will find
All I need in you alone, in you alone

In you there's life everlasting
In you there's freedom for my soul
In you there's joy, unending joy
and I will follow

Sometimes when I don’t know what I am doing, or why God would choose someone like me to do his work in a place like Spain, this song reminds me that I am simply following Him. I can’t find unending joy in Jesus when I don’t choose to obey Him.

Until The Whole World Hears – Missional Music Monday

By Monday, August 9, 2010 0 0

I’m on a little bit of a low since candidate seminar ended, which is to be expected. You go go go for nearly three weeks, 100 percent focused on the next big step of your life: moving across the world, alongside 30 other people in exactly the same boat, and then you come back to reality, which is a waiting room of sorts.

Not that the waiting room is a bad thing: if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that God prepares waiting rooms with as much intention as He prepares seasons of change, trial, and triumph. He can be just as glorified in my waiting on Him as He is in my doing things through Him.

But waiting rooms aren’t blogworthy!

I do have a mini update, though:

1. We’re working on prayer cards. I may develop two or three more and have a vote, or I may just go with the one I developed. Do you guys want to vote on our prayer card?

2. We’ll send out our first prayer letter once we’ve got our church logistics set.

3. The team in Spain could use your prayers: soon they’ll be starting an outreach for teens, ages 12-16. This is what Chris and I want to do when we get to Spain, but they obviously can’t wait for us. Please pray alongside us for the following:

  • Students: pray that God would bring unsaved and saved kids to the outreach events and that they would get involved and be responsive to the Gospel.
  • Confidence: youth ministry is somewhat unfamiliar to our teammate Rich, but God has called him and given him a coworker who is willing to help with ideas and activities.
  • Fruit: pray that students would become believers, act in faith and be baptized, and begin to grow in their faith. Young people coming to the Lord are often the jumpstart that little churches need to engage in evangelism and discipleship on deeper levels, so a fruitful youth ministry might be God’s way of making a fruitful church.
  • Us: we are almost jealous to be in Spain helping out. Ask God to give us patience while we do prefield ministry and at the same time move swiftly to get us there soon.

Casting Crowns – Until the Whole World Hears

Lord I want to feel your heart
and see the world through your eyes
I want to be your hands and feet
I want to live a life that leads

chorus
ready yourselves
ready yourselves
Let us shine the light of Jesus in the darkest night
ready yourselves
ready yourselves
May the powers of darkness tremble as our praises rise
Until the whole world hears Lord we are calling out
Lifting up Your name for all to hear the sound
Like voices in the wilderness we’re crying out
as the day draws near
we’ll sing until the whole world hears

Lord let your sleeping giant arise
Catch the demons by surprise
Holy nation sanctified
Let this be our battle cry

chorus

we’ll sing until the whole world hears
we’ll sing until the whole world hears

Want to be your hands and feet
Want to be a life that leads
To see you set the captive free
Until the whole world hears
and I pray that they will see more of you and less of me
Lord I want my life to be the song You sing
Until the whole world hears Lord we are calling out
Lifting your name up for all to hear the sound
Like voices in the wilderness we’re crying out
as the day draws near
we’ll sing until the whole world hears
we’ll sing until the whole world hears
we’ll sing until the whole world hears

You Said – Missional Music Monday

By Monday, August 2, 2010 0 0

The perfect follow up song for the theme of Missionary Enrichment (which was The Promises of God) is Hillsong United’s “You Said.”

Hillsong – You Said

You said ask and you will receive
Whatever you need
You said pray and I’ll hear from heaven
And I’ll heal your land

You said Your glory will fill the earth
Oh like water the seas
You said lift up your eyes
The harvest is here
The kingdom is near

You said ask and I’ll give the nations to you
O Lord that’s the cry of my heart
You said distant shores and the islands will see
Your light as it rises on us

O Lord, we ask for the nations
O Lord, we ask for the nations
O Lord, we are asking for the nations
