Missional Music Monday: Your Great Name

This song is missional because it is about declaring that one day, all the world will praise the great name of our Lord.

In spite of my complaints, my lack of effort, my making a short prefield my idol, my judgments and divisiveness, this is my heart.

The lyrics are in the video, but here they are again:

Your Great Name
Lost are saved; find their way; at the sound of your great name
All condemned; feel no shame, at the sound of your great name
Every fear; has no place; at the sound of your great name
The enemy; he has to leave; at the sound of your great name

Jesus, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain for us,
Son of God and Man You are high and lifted up; that all the world will praise your great name

All the weak; find their strength; at the sound of your great name
Hungry souls; receive grace; at the sound of your great name
The fatherless; they will find their rest; at the sound of your great name
Sick are healed; and the dead are raised; at the sound of your great name

Jesus, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain for us,
Son of God and Man You are high and lifted up; that all the world will praise your great name

Redeemer, My Healer, Lord Almighty
My savior, Defender, You are My King

Jesus, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain for us,
Son of God and Man You are high and lifted up; that all the world will praise your great name

Asleep In The Light

Today’s missional music is not as hard-hitting as it was in the 70s and 80s, I’d say. Yet, the need is as present as ever and apathy for the lost grows.

Do you see, do you see, all the people sinking down,
Don’t you care, don’t you care, are you gonna let them drown,
How can you be so numb, not to care if they come,
You close your eyes and pretend the job’s done.

Oh Bless me Lord, bless me Lord, you know it’s all I ever hear,
No one aches, no one hurts, no one even sheds one tear,
But He cries, He weeps, He bleeds, and He cares for your needs,
And you just lay back and keep soaking it in, oh, can’t you see it’s such sin?

Cause He brings people to your door,
And you turn them away, as you smile and say,
God bless you, be at peace, and all Heaven just weeps,
Cause Jesus came to your door, you’ve left Him out on the streets.

Open up, open up, and give yourself away,
You’ve seen the need, you hear the cry, so how can you delay,
God’s calling and you’re the one, but like Jonah you run,
He’s told you to speak, but you keep holding it in,
Oh, can’t you see it’s such sin?

The world is sleeping in the dark,
That the church can’t fight, cause it’s asleep in the light,
How can you be so dead, when you’ve been so well fed,
Jesus rose from the grave, and you, you can’t even get out of bed,
Oh, Jesus rose from the dead, come on, get out of your bed.

How can you be so numb, not to care if they come,
You close your eyes and pretend the job’s done,
You close your eyes and pretend the job’s done,
Don’t close your eyes, don’t pretend the job’s done.
Come away, come away, come away with Me, My love,
Come away, from this mess, come away with Me, My love.

Missional Music Monday – Rock of Ages

So, this song is definitely not traditionally missional song. It’s a praise song about the Rock of Ages, Jesus, Who is unlike any other.

But, singing it following a wonderful sermon about the Rock of Ages known by Daniel, God gave me a beautiful picture.

Rocks. Some…

In my mind, I pictured a big, solid rock with one flat side. Then I imagined literally laying down each of our upcoming tasks on that rock. First, I laid down a huge binder we just received in the mail: our New Testament class. Then, I laid down a box of prayer cards, envelopes and an Excel spreadsheet featuring all the potential supporting churches within 100 miles of our home. In another open spot, I laid down a stack of letters, one by one, addressed to the pastors of churches in our area. Some other things I laid down in my vision: a finance email, a prefield checklist, and a mental image of our car’s odometer.

Not surprisingly, the Rock held up! ;)

Missional Music Monday – Christmas Edition

Christmas is pretty much all about missions. When you get right down to it, God sending His Son was the first mission trip!

Ok, I just thought of something: you could argue that John the Baptist was actually the first missionary. Many of the OT prophets were missionaries of sorts too.

But the Good News was born in a manger, and this song tells us to share it.
