I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions. They’re too big, too lofty, and too laden with potential for failure. But this year, I have a word.

Cast your burden on the Lord,
and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22

I am trying to read scripture more actively. I have dropped out of Bible Study Fellowship in order to focus more of my time on prefield ministry and work, so I am reading smaller portions of scripture more often in its place. Since I won’t be answering questions about my daily passages, and I want to engage the scripture better, I am asking, “how?”

So this year, my prayer is that God will teach me exactly how to “cast my burdens on the Lord.” It sure sounds like something I want to do, but I am not entirely certain I can. It must mean more than just “trust the Lord,” or “don’t worry.”

Right now, it means saying, sometimes out loud, “Jesus, I trust you,” each morning. I am looking forward to seeing all the ways He teaches me to cast my burdens on Him, and all the ways He sustains me through this year.

With all that we have going on (did you hear? We’re going to have a baby in July!), I am certain He’ll have lots of opportunity to sustain me.
